About Cherrapunji
Earlier the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunji (Sohra) in Meghalaya is known for its double-decker living root bridge — a natural wonder grown over centuries by the Khasi people. Located around 50 km from Shillong, this sub-divisional town is famous for rich flora and natural attractions. Although Mawsynram now holds the rainfall record, Cherrapunji still holds the record for highest rainfall in a single calendar year. Apart from the living root bridges, natural attractions include the Mawsmai Caves and Krem Phyllut cave formations. Asia's cleanest village, Mawlynnong, is a famous nearby tourist spot. Misty valleys and waterfalls make long drives ideal for road trip lovers. The breathtaking Nohkalikai Waterfalls and the town of Dawki at the Bangladesh border offer wonderful clearwater boating in winter.
