Lakshadweep is India's smallest Union Territory — a coral archipelago of 36 islands (only 10 inhabited) in the Arabian Sea, 220-440 km off the Kerala coast. With stunning lagoons, coral reefs, and marine life, it's India's answer to the Maldives — but far less commercialised. Agatti IslandAgatti Island has the only airport and serves as the gateway. Bangaram Island is an uninhabited atoll with pristine beaches and a single eco-resort. Kavaratti, the capital, has the beautiful Ujra Mosque with elaborate ceiling carvings and an aquarium showcasing lagoon marine life. Minicoy, the southernmost island, has a distinctive culture influenced by the Maldives and a 19th-century lighthouse. Entry requires a permit (Indian nationals only for most islands; Bangaram and Kadmat are open to foreigners). Water sports include kayaking, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat rides, and scuba diving in crystal-clear lagoons.
