About Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya in Bihar is the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site in the world — where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi TreeBodhi Tree to become the Buddha, 2,500 years ago. The Mahabodhi TempleMahabodhi Temple Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the original Bodhi TreeBodhi Tree (a descendant of the original), the Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) where Buddha sat, and the 55m temple tower. Monasteries built by countries including Japan, Thailand, Bhutan, Tibet, and China surround the complex — each reflecting their national architectural style, creating a mini world tour. The 25m Great Buddha Statue in meditation pose is the tallest in India. The Dungeshwari Cave Temples (where Buddha practiced extreme asceticism before choosing the Middle Way), the Sujata Stupa, and the Muchalinda Lake add to the pilgrimage circuit.
